Michelangelo the famous Italian sculptor, painter, architect and a poet of the the High Renaissance said:
“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there,
I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.“
Yoga has a similar approach as it is a journey back home to the true essence of the Self which is pure, perfect and complete.
All we need to do is remove what is not. It is a journey from Ignorance to Wisdom (of our true divine nature)
How do we remove the false? Yoga gives us the Yamas and Niyamas as the stepping stones towards the truth. In our Friday’s practice I have shared the first four yamas.
The fifth Yama is Aparigrah.
Aparigrah means non-greed, non- attachment, non- possessiveness. This Yama is all about removing the false, the unnecessary things we keep holding on to that are actually blocking us from seeing clearly.
We should “see” the same way Micelangelo could see beyond the layers of the rock into what is ingrained within.
